Keeping Your Child Toothache Free

According to the American Dental Health Association, dental decay is the most common chronic disease in children. Tooth decay, caused by plaque and bacteria can lead to cavities, toothaches and sleepless nights.

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent your child from the discomfort of a toothache. Encouraging good oral hygiene habits will help keep your child in the peak of oral health.

Even if your child has not started teething yet, you can still take preventive measures. Avoid giving your child sweet drinks; this prevents the child from developing a sweet tooth later in life.

Once your child has started growing baby teeth, teach him or her to brush. You will need to supervise your child at this age, but he or she will slowly learn to do it themselves. When they are old enough, make brushing time fun for the whole family. Have a positive attitude; don't make it sound like a chore when you ask your child to brush their teeth. Buy colourful toothbrushes and flavoured toothpaste, if you find that this encourages your child to brush their teeth. Just make sure that the toothpaste you buy contains sufficient amounts of fluoride as recommended by experts.

As your child gets older, instill other good dental habits such as flossing and using a mouth wash. If your child cannot stand the minty flavours often found in dental healthcare products, there are various fun-flavoured mouthwashes and flosses available in the market today.

Make visits to your dentist an event for the whole family. Children often have a skewed perception of the dentist; this is often influenced by media stereotype. However, address your child's fears seriously as children are usually sensitive to these things. Your reaction to their fears may affect their relationship with dentists for years to come. These are just little things you can do that will hopefully keep your child toothache free!
