Scared of the Dentist?
Fear of the dentist often stems from childhood. As a child, the dentist's chair may seem a daunting place to be. Media stereotypes do little to discourage this perception. In movies, dentists are often seen as stern, rigid and almost sadistic in their infliction of pain!
However, this fear may be of some concern when it prevents one from getting the right treatment for toothaches and various dental afflictions. Telling someone about it, talking to someone, joining a support group, having a heart-to-heart with your dentist may allow you a dental visit with a more comfortable state of mind.
For some, the fear of the dentist may not be psychological, but financial. It is true, dental fees can sometimes range from expensive to exorbitant. Remember, you do not automatically need to pay such fees. The dentist would need to check your teeth first, and if treatment is required, he or she will schedule another appointment for you. Topics such as fees and payment are opened for discussion. It would certainly be better to ask than regret later!
Occasionally, it is embarrassment that keeps us from the dentist's chair. Some people have this false idea that their teeth need to be in tip-top shape to visit the dentist. Not true! Getting over feelings of embarrassment or self-consciousness will improve your oral health and possibly, your self-confidence.
Whatever the reason, learn to get over your fears and worries. Visits to the dentist to get your teeth professionally cleaned and regularly checked will help them stay healthy and keep toothache at bay!
